Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Monthly Prayer Shawl Workshops gather at the Sow's Ear, Main Street, Verona on the second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Informal, bi-monthly Prayer Shawl gatherings meet over coffee or tea at the Sow’s Ear in Verona on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Established three years ago, the Prayer Shawl Ministry is supported by the active participation of 20 to 30 women (and one brave man) who crochet or knit monthly at prayer shawl workshops and also independently at home.

The colorful shawls are created with love and prayer to provide comfort and warmth to those with a physical, spiritual or emotional need. They are displayed and blessed bi-annually by our pastors and congregation during a special “blessing of the prayer shawls” service. This powerful and healing ministry, for participants and recipients alike, was founded by two women in Connecticut in 1998 and has since spread around the world.

In 2007, this ministry at St. James expanded and began creating white baptismal prayer shawls which are presented to infants and their parents at their baptism.

If you would like to enjoy the comaradarie of fellow stitchers, please join us at a regularly scheduled workshop. Yarn, patterns and prayer handouts are available at the workshops or by request from our parish nurse. Knitting or crocheting instruction is available by request. If you have questions or would like more information please contact Judy Fetherston at 845-6922, extension 234.

St. James Prayer Shawl Ministry was featured in the July 2008 issue of Wisconsin Woman Magazine. At their site, click on Archive in the top left corner to locate the issue. Scroll down to page 18 to read the excerpt.
